Our Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Battery Engineer/Scientist for our Data Sciences Practice in our Natick, MA office. In this role, you will collaborate with a team to design, conduct battery and battery pack testing, and perform data analysis to develop battery analytical tools. You will also contribute to our energy storage consulting services at Exponent. We are looking for an individual with three to five years of hands-on experience in battery research and development, possibly gained during a doctorate degree. Experience with custom test design, instrumentation, and commercial battery cycler programming is a plus. Responsibilities include applying this experience to tackle challenging battery electrochemistry and data analysis problems for our clients. You will work closely with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers, playing a key role in designing and executing experiments, as well as interpreting and presenting data. The successful applicant will demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and contribute to preparing reports and presenting results to clients.

You will be responsible for

  • Developing test plans, instrumenting, and carrying out laboratory tests
  • Advising clients on experimental designs
  • Performing engineering calculations and analyses        
  • Preparing proposals and technical reports, and presenting findings to clients
  • Supporting a range of consulting activities related to controls and algorithm development in MATLAB and Python
  • Evaluating battery algorithms such as SOC, SOH, SOF, balancing, etc.
  • Building data pipelines to automate testing and visualize data in real-time
  • Defining and assessing software reliability, failure modes, and fault reactions
  • Providing operational support for prototype hardware and software systems including system validation and troubleshooting

You will have the following skills and qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Controls Engineering or a related engineering/scientific field
  • Specialized knowledge of materials characterization techniques is beneficial
  • Experience with commercial battery testing
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in one or more of the following areas:
    • Advanced sensing technology
    • Controls engineering
    • Estimation
    • Parameter identification
    • Control
  • Machine learning data set design or optimization
  • Experience in instrumentation, data acquisition, and data processing
  • Experience with large data sets
  • The desire to work with a diverse set of clients and engage in work outside of the traditional data science field
  • Strong practical engineering ability combined with leadership and project management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams
